The magazine age is completely coming to an end, and as I
still rush to get my favorite copy of Essence Magazine every month I wonder how
long that ride will last. Vibe Magazine has decided to shut its print doors and
open up its web doors with plans to shut Vibe magazine down completely by 2013.
Wow.
Spin Media who represents more than 40 online sites that
cater to young pop culture including Concrete Loop, Celebuzz, and Just Jared.
The media company shut down the print division last year and went to web driven
content. Now this might mean some crazy lay-offs for Vibe Magazine, but their
print outlet has been suffering for a while. “Some of the fantastic memorable
covers included Notorious
B.I.G., P. Diddy, and the infamous Death Row Records issue
that featured Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Dr.Dre and Suge Knight”. Now
I can really try to sell all the magazines I’ve saved up in my house, I knew
one day they would become collectors’ items.
It’s really exciting to add this [Vibe] to SpinMedia’s collection of music properties and bring more digital DNA to the team and see what they can do.
We’re still trying to find a print model that works with digital economics, and that continues to be a challenge. It’s not as though I have an aversion to print. It’s just a matter of the economics.
